As December settles over Northern Virginia and the first snow-filled evenings drift through Alexandria, Arlington, and Fairfax County, there is a moment when the world feels softer, quieter. Windows begin to glow a little earlier. Evergreen wreaths appear on doors. The last amber leaves of autumn catch the early holiday lights, and the streets take on a gentle shimmer. And inside, our homes become the heart of it all.
Every year, I can't help but talk about how deeply I cherish this season. That feeling is still at the center of everything we design at AMD. There is a holiday magic in interiors that goes beyond décor. It is the rhythm of garlands along a staircase, the glow of candles reflected on carefully chosen materials, the layered textures that invite touch, and the way every detail, from tree placement to ribbon drape, makes a home feel beautifully alive.
That said, your holiday décor does not have to be extravagant or overly complicated. The beauty of this season comes through thoughtful layers, rich textures, and meaningful pieces displayed with intention. Whether we are styling a historic row home in Old Town Alexandria, a modern classic interior design project in Arlington, or an elegant home in Fairfax County, our goal is always the same: create a space that feels warm, nostalgic, and deeply personal. A space that sparkles, but softly.
Begin With the Feeling and the Story
Pause for a moment before decorating to imagine the holiday memories you want your home to hold. For designers, every detail begins with the story. Are you dreaming of a classic, nostalgic Christmas with warm reds, candlelight, and heirlooms? Or something more refined, filled with soft neutrals, greenery, and metallic accents?
Considering the architecture is always the first step. Our approach focuses on proportion and scale to create a balanced, cohesive space:
Tall ceilings and detailed millwork are enhanced with décor that complements the home’s character.
Modern or open floor plans benefit from clean silhouettes and thoughtfully layered elements.
Scale is key:
Trees should sit within one to two feet of the ceiling to feel proportionate.
Garland on a long mantle should drop at least eighteen to twenty-four inches for a lush, polished effect. We often like to take it all the way to the floor and let it pool a bit.
When you begin with emotion and proportion, the rest of the design falls into place.
The Quiet Charm of Velvet Ribbon

Velvet ribbon is a holiday classic, offering texture, color, and a subtle sense of movement that elevates any space. Its soft sheen catches candlelight beautifully, adding depth and warmth to mantels, staircases, and garlands.
When selecting a ribbon for your holiday décor, think about width, weight, and drape to create visual balance, ensuring the ribbon complements the scale of the room and accompanying elements.
This is the kind of detail that feels familiar, like a ribbon you might have seen on a grandmother’s wreath or tied around a cherished gift. Reimagined with purpose, velvet ribbon can guide the eye along a staircase, frame a mantel, or add a graceful flourish to a centerpiece, seamlessly blending nostalgia with thoughtful, high-end holiday styling.
Ribbon width and construction are key to achieving a balanced, sophisticated look:
For garlands, 1.5–2.5 inch wide velvet ribbon creates a refined, layered effect.
Larger spaces, such as a dramatic staircase or grand foyer, can handle 4-inch ribbon for sweeping, romantic tails.
Double-faced velvet offers a soft drape and subtle weight, allowing the ribbon to move gracefully along a mantel or around a centerpiece.
Candlelight in Holiday Interiors
Candlelight adds warmth and depth to any space, highlighting textures and creating a sense of rhythm. The soft flicker reflects off ribbons, greenery, and polished surfaces, enhancing architectural details and layering visual interest.
We recommend layering candlelight with intention:
Grouped taper candles or even LED tapers between 2200K and 2700K create a warm, inviting glow.
Votives add delicate points of light along tables, staircases, or shelves.
Hurricanes provide a steady, grounding presence and enhance the overall ambience.
For gatherings, tapers should be spaced at least three inches apart to ensure safety and visual balance, and mantels should be a minimum of eight inches deep to accommodate layered candles securely. These thoughtful details allow interiors to feel luminous and intimate.

Layering Sentimental Pieces
Holiday magic is rooted in memories, heirlooms, and pieces that hold personal meaning, not just trending décor. A single cherished ornament can carry more emotion than an entire new collection.
Begin with a quiet base such as soft lighting, natural greenery, glass or ceramic accents, and family china. Allow treasured items to take center stage, whether it is a wooden ornament passed down through generations, a small angel, a silver bell with etched initials, or tasteful ornaments collected during travels.

The rule of three can guide placement, with one meaningful item accompanied by two supporting elements to create balance while letting each piece tell its own story. Arranged thoughtfully across mantels, tables, and shelving, these objects bring warmth and personality to interiors, making the season feel both curated and deeply personal.
Evergreens That Warm the Season
Fresh greenery is one of the most nostalgic elements of holiday design. Its scent instantly evokes memories and brings a natural warmth to interiors. Popular choices include firs, pines, spruces, and cedars, each offering unique texture, color, and fragrance. Boxwood and eucalyptus can be added for a soft, modern touch, while magnolia leaves provide glossy depth and a timeless feel.
For fullness and visual interest, multiple garlands are often layered together. A single strand rarely achieves the lush, curated look expected in high-end interiors.
For staircases, garlands are draped naturally, mimicking the gentle flow of evergreen boughs in the forest.
Conditioning the greenery by soaking it in cold water for a full day helps prevent drying and preserves its fragrance.
Branches can be wired or tucked to create movement and balance, and clippings can fill in tablescapes, mantels, or entryway vignettes.
Styling varies depending on the home’s aesthetic. In modern classic interiors, greenery is often paired with delicate white lights and soft metallic accents. In more traditional spaces, pops of deep red berries, velvet ribbons, or gold accents can add warmth and richness. Layering different textures, heights, and tones ensures each arrangement feels thoughtful, luxurious, and welcoming.
Scale, Proportion, and the Quiet Art of Placement
Attention to scale and proportion can elevate holiday décor from pretty to effortlessly refined. Keep these key points in mind:
Tree Skirt: For a 7.5-foot tree, choose a skirt measuring 52–60 inches to properly ground the tree.
Console Décor: Décor should rise to roughly two-thirds of the wall height above the console for visual balance.
Mantel Arrangements: Keep décor lower than any artwork or mirrors to maintain proportion.
Holiday Florals: Condition, trim, and maintain proper water temperature to ensure arrangements stay fresh and vibrant throughout gatherings.
Applying these measurements and techniques results in a home that feels thoughtfully composed, warm, and inviting, with every detail in its place.
The Nostalgic Beauty of the Season
This year, remember that the holidays do not need to feel overwhelming or like a race to the next best thing. The season is most magical when it leans into what you already have. Natural elements such as fresh greenery, soft candlelight, and cherished heirlooms bring texture, warmth, and quiet beauty to your home. Carefully chosen ornaments and layered details evoke memories and the nostalgic magic of the season, allowing spaces to feel both elegant and deeply personal.
From a mantel draped in garland to a table set with meaningful pieces, every corner becomes part of the story. Soft lighting, rich textures, and thoughtful placement ensure that the home feels inviting without feeling busy, letting each detail shine in its own right. By embracing simplicity and intention, interiors transform into calm, welcoming sanctuaries, ready for gatherings and quiet moments alike.
This is where holiday design truly sparkles, creating spaces that are timeless, personal, and full of joy.
