Just beyond Alexandria in Falls Church, we had the opportunity to design a home for a hardworking couple who wanted their space to reflect their style, their success, and the life they’ve built together. From the beginning, they were drawn to a more masculine, tailored direction, one that allowed for richer, more atmospheric moments while still feeling bright, welcoming, and easy to live in. Their love of entertaining, music, and hosting became a natural guiding thread, shaping how each space would be used and experienced.

We approached the design with a focus on balance, allowing the home to feel layered and dynamic while still maintaining a cohesive and intentional thread throughout. In the family room, a lighter palette introduces a sense of ease and openness, while sculptural furnishings and paneled millwork in a muted blue bring structure and architectural interest. Each piece was selected to feel both tailored and inviting, creating a living space that supports everyday comfort while still feeling elevated. This balance between form and function is central to our approach to modern classic interior design, particularly in Northern Virginia homes where clients are looking for spaces that feel as livable as they are refined.

In the home office, we carried that same tailored approach into a more focused, functional space. Framed by glass-paneled doors, the office feels connected to the rest of the home while still offering a sense of separation and purpose. Built-in millwork in a deep bronze tone creates a strong architectural backdrop, while a clean-lined desk and warm leather seating introduce contrast and refinement. Layered with thoughtful styling and soft textiles underfoot, the space feels considered and composed, designed to support productivity without sacrificing the overall aesthetic of the home.

At the center of the home is the salon, a space designed entirely around how the clients love to live. We began to think of this space as the salon, a name that reflects its role as a place for gathering, music, and conversation. Originally two separate rooms, a formal dining room and a piano sitting area, we reimagined the layout to create one larger, cohesive space designed for connection. The transformation allows for a natural flow between seating, music, and entertaining, making the room feel both expansive and inviting.

Wrapped in a rich teal tone, the space sets the stage for evenings filled with jazz, conversation, and candlelight. In shaping the overall direction of the salon, we were intentional about creating a sophisticated, speakeasy-inspired atmosphere, one that nods to an era defined by richness, glamour, and connection. There is a subtle reference to that Gatsby-era sensibility in the layering of materials, the warmth of the lighting, and the intimacy of the seating arrangement. A curved rust-toned sofa introduces a sculptural softness, while brass accents and layered textures add warmth and refinement. The piano anchors the room, reinforcing its purpose as a space meant to be experienced.

Throughout the home, we introduced subtle Art Deco influences to bring in structure, rhythm, and character. Rather than feeling overt, these elements are woven in with intention. In the salon, a geometric ceiling detail adds pattern and visual movement, drawing the eye upward and enhancing the architecture of the space. The dry bar carries that language forward with a textured geometric backsplash, fluted cabinetry, and a mural-like backdrop that adds depth and atmosphere.

In the powder room, we took the opportunity to create a more expressive, jewel-box moment within the home, one that feels directly connected to the experience of the salon. Because this space is so closely tied to where guests gather, it was important that it carried the same level of intention and presence, rather than feeling like an afterthought.

The room leans into a richer, more immersive palette, with a sculptural sink that introduces both form and texture, paired with graphic flooring that brings a strong sense of pattern underfoot. Brass fixtures and warm metallic accents add contrast and refinement, allowing the finishes to stand out against the deeper tones of the space. While more dramatic in its expression, the powder room still feels cohesive with the overall design, completing the guest experience and reinforcing the layered, elevated feel of the home.

Because our clients love to entertain, the dining area just off the kitchen was designed with both scale and comfort in mind. A generously sized dining table paired with upholstered seating allows guests to settle in and stay awhile, whether for a casual dinner or a larger gathering. The connection to the kitchen supports an easy, natural flow when hosting, while soft drapery and natural light keep the space feeling open and inviting during the day. Subtle green tones in the dining chairs tie back to the deeper palette used throughout the home, reinforcing a sense of continuity from room to room.

The kitchen already had a strong foundation, but it lacked the sense of connection present throughout the rest of the home. Rather than a complete overhaul, we focused on thoughtful updates that would bring it into alignment with the overall vision. The island, once a deep gray, was repainted in a tone that ties directly into the surrounding spaces, creating a stronger visual connection.

A new backsplash introduces an Art Deco influence, bringing in a subtle geometric detail that echoes the home’s more expressive moments, while the pendants add sculptural interest and a refined presence overhead. We completed the space with a new faucet and pot filler, adding a tailored detail that feels both functional and considered, ensuring the kitchen feels fully integrated and moves seamlessly with the rest of the home.

Every decision in this Falls Church home was made with intention, from the material selections to the overall flow and function of the spaces. The goal was not only to create a beautiful home, but one that feels cohesive, livable, and reflective of the people who live there. While located just outside Alexandria, the home embodies the timeless, layered interior design approach that defines our work throughout Alexandria and the surrounding Northern Virginia area.

Ultimately, this home is a reflection of our clients and how they live day to day. It supports everything from hosting dinner parties with friends to evenings spent gathered around the piano, creating a space that feels composed, personal, and designed for a life well lived.
