Why We Love Custom Drapery: The Unspoken Finishing Touch

There’s a certain kind of quiet magic that happens when curtains are added to a room.
Not the kind of magic that announces itself loudly, but the kind you feel. That soft sense of completion. A hush that settles. The way natural light is suddenly more poetic. The way the entire room begins to feel more thoughtful, more grounded, more complete.
At Asha Maia Design, we often use the terms curtains and custom drapery interchangeably. But when we talk about curtains, we’re not referring to off-the-shelf panels or ready-made solutions. We’re talking about thoughtfully designed, tailored window treatments that are made to suit the space in both function and feel. What we truly mean is custom drapery.
It’s one of the most impactful layers in a room, and yet often one of the most underestimated. Drapery can provide privacy and light control, yes, but more than that, it brings softness, balance, and intention to a space. It can draw the eye up, highlight architecture, frame views, or quietly support the mood of a room without ever asking for attention.
They are simple, yet transformative, and we use them with purpose.

Pleated with Purpose
A curtain’s pleat is like the architecture of its fabric. It determines how the material hangs, moves, and lives in the room. At Asha Maia Design, pleat selection is always thoughtful, because each one brings a different energy.
Here’s a look at the most common pleat styles:

★ Euro Pleat (2-finger or 3-finger): Our signature pleat of choice. The Euro pleat is tacked at the very top of the panel rather than slightly below, creating a structured yet relaxed fall. The 2-finger version offers a lighter, cleaner look, while the 3-finger adds a bit more fullness and formality. It’s the perfect blend of traditional and modern, which is why it fits beautifully into Asha Maía Design's new traditional design aesthetic.

Pinch Pleat: A more traditional style where fabric is gathered into sewn pleats a few inches down from the top. It’s structured and classic, offering a formal silhouette that feels timeless. The pinch pleat also is available in a 2-finger or 3-finger option, again to help with desired fullness and formality.
Box Pleat: Pleats are folded under at each edge to form a flat, wide column of fabric. This style feels tailored and architectural, perfect for a masculine or modern aesthetic.
Goblet Pleat: A decorative and formal style where the top of each pleat is shaped like a goblet or wine glass. This is best suited for grand, traditional interiors
Grommet Top: While functional, grommet-top curtains lack the softness and sophistication we seek. The stiff fall and visible hardware interrupt the flow of fabric, which is why we opt for pleated styles that feel more curated and timeless.
Designer Note:
For elevated interiors, grommet-top curtains fall short. Their casual, hardware-forward look lacks the softness and sophistication that custom drapery brings to a well-designed space.
Curtain Panels vs. Operable Drapery
There’s a misconception that curtains always need to function, meaning they should close, open, and move daily. But the truth is, stationary curtain panels that simply frame a window can offer most of the aesthetic and design benefits without needing to be operable.

We often design with stationary panels, especially when pairing them with woven wood shades or Roman shades that already provide light control and privacy. The curtains in these cases are about feeling, not function. They add softness, verticality, color, texture, and that sense of polish that makes a room feel considered.
And when it comes to budget, this approach offers a subtle opportunity to save. Because less fabric is used, stationary panels can provide a cost-effective solution while still achieving the same visual impact. You are not sacrificing design or intention, you are simply letting the curtains play a supporting, but beautiful, role.
Operable or split-draw curtains still have their place, especially in bedrooms or rooms where blackout lining is needed. But in most living spaces, fixed panels paired with shades create the layered, elevated look we love.
The Lining Makes the Mood
The lining you choose does more than add function. It defines the way a space feels, and we approach that choice with just as much care as the fabric itself.
Privacy Lining: This light-filtering option adds softness without blocking daylight. We use it in living rooms and dining rooms where a warm glow and a bit of privacy are welcome.
Blackout Lining: Ideal for bedrooms and media rooms, blackout lining ensures light control and adds structure to the drape. It also offers thermal insulation, helping with comfort and energy efficiency.
Unlined or Sheer: This gives curtains an ethereal quality, letting light pass through while still softening a room. Perfect for layering or for spaces where privacy isn’t a concern.
Each lining changes the way fabric drapes, the way light moves, and the way a room feels. It’s one of those quiet but powerful design decisions we guide every client through.
How Curtains Should Hang
The way curtains meet the floor completely changes their feel. We’re particular about this detail, because when it’s right, the room just sings.
We love curtains to just skim the floor or kiss it lightly. This creates a look that is clean and tailored, but still soft and relaxed. It brings refinement to a room without feeling fussy or rigid. This home office from our Colesanto Park Project is a great illustration of stationary panel drapes that gently kiss the floor.

Many clients shy away from curtains because they associate them with the overly formal look of puddled drapery, where fabric pools dramatically on the floor. While that can be stunning in the right setting, it often feels too traditional or high-maintenance for everyday living. It’s also what has led some to believe that custom drapery is too precious or impractical.
Our approach is more grounded. A gentle kiss or clean break at the floor keeps the feel romantic and elevated, but still livable. It’s the kind of understated beauty that brings a room to life without demanding attention.

A Soft Layer That Grounds It All
We believe beauty lives in the details, and curtains are one of those details that quietly complete a space. They frame your view, soften the edges, and make a room feel intentional. They’re not always the first thing you notice, but once they’re in, it’s impossible to imagine the space without them.
They are softness. They are structure. They are that final touch that makes a room feel not just designed, but finished.
And at Asha Maia Design, we never overlook the power of a beautiful drape.
Design That Feels Complete
Custom drapery is just one of the many thoughtful layers that bring a home to life. At Asha Maia Design, we believe that every detail matters, from the way the light filters through a linen panel to how each room flows into the next with beauty and purpose.
If you’re ready to create a home that feels deeply considered and entirely your own, we would love to guide you through the process.
